Have an 87 Force 125hp outboard. I have been running regular (87 octane) gas mixed with the outboard oil. Someone informed me that I should be running the highest octane rated gasoline available at the pump (92 octane). Is there any truth to this. I don't want to damage anything.

Go to "Search" and type in "octane" and prepare yourself for an evening of reading.

c/6

Hooty

Quite honestly even on my sport bike I've got to use a little imagination to notice a difference between 87& 92.Kind of makes you wonder sometimes what your paying extra for.

I have heard that it is better to run 87 octane. The higher the octane the higher the combustion temp. I think that I would much rather pay less and have confidence than to pay more and have to worry about damaging my engine.

To help all who have 'heard' this or that, do follow Hooty's advice and read the posts about it.

Bottom line is: Use the rated octane or the closest above if not available.

BRIce,

Actually, higher octane fuels run cooler. Not something you want in an outboard combustion chamber.

Higher octane fuels are more prone to leave deposits (in an engine that was not designed for high octane) in the combustion chambers.

Your Force will like 87 just fine.

Do you experience trouble free operation on 2 strokes with the 95 octane?Johnson/evinrude and the like.
