The owners manual says .5 pints oil to 1 gallon of gas, is this still correct? There is a lot of smoke when run with this mixture.
Thanks!

Gon...

Geez...someone help me with the math here. What's that come out to? .5 pint (8 oz) oil per 1 gallon (128 oz) gas. Lessee here... 128 divided by 8 equals 16...so I guess that would be a 16:1 fuel/oil ratio. Right??

With today's high quality TC-W3 two stroke oil, you should be able to run your engine with a 28:1 or even perhaps a 32:1 fuel/oil mixture but nothing leaner than that! Your manual probably says to use 30w oil too... Don't use that!

Walt

Re: Gas/Oil ratio for 1954 Johnson 3hp?

I have a '55 Johnson 3hp. I have been running 32:1 (4 ounces per gallon). Everyone says the oil we buy today has advanced enough to run our older outboards a little leaner. A buddy of mine runs his old outboard at 50:1. I don't want to chance being too lean. My has just a hint of smoke at start up and runs like a top. Hope this helps.
Joe

Re: Gas/Oil ratio for 1954 Johnson 3hp?

Chinewalker once posted that most outboards mfg'd after 1960 will tolerate a fuel/oil mixture of 50:1. Wait...now that I think about it, maybe he was referring only to Mercs... Anyway, I think it's a safe bet that when using todays oils that your pre-1960 outboard could run fine on a considerably leaning mixture than what was originally called for. However, to run an outboard mfg'd before 1960 on a 50:1 mixture is, in my opinion, asking for trouble. Like Joe stated...I'd rather run mine a tad bit richer and put up with a little more exhaust smoke at idle than to "smoke" my engine by running her too lean.

Walt

Re: Gas/Oil ratio for 1954 Johnson 3hp?

Hi Walt,
Yes, my 50:1 remark was directed at the older Mercs. Most any Merc can handle it for awhile, as even back into the late 1940s they were "full-jeweled" - remember that one? I run my vintage (pre 1960) Mercs pretty hard so I like to up it to 32:1 for them, 20:1 for my racing stuff.
As for the little Johnson JW, run it at 24:1 and it'll run forever. Keep in mind that those old babbit bearing motors (ALL OMC motors prior to 1955, and some into the early 1970s) need the extra oil not just for lubing, but also for sealing purposes. The tolerances on the old motors were a lot looser than the new ones and the oil helped cushion things, too. Simple rule - if it has babbit bearings on the rod journals, run it 24:1. If it has needle bearings, you can lan it out from there depending on where else needles and rollers can be found. For instance, a 1959 10hp OMC has needles in the upper main bearing and on the crank/rod journals, but still has bronze at the lower and center mains - better off at 32:1. The 5.5hp from the same year is all bronze bushings and bearings - run it 24:1. The 3hp motors didn't get any needle bearings until mid 1960s, and still used bronze bearings on the rods, center main, and lower main into the mid 1970s as it was updated to the 4hp - run them at 32:1.

How about that for a long answer to a simple question??? I'll shut up now...
- Scott

Chinewalker...

I don't think there's such thing as "too much information." Thanks Scott for sharing all that. My hands-on experience is rather limited and I'm sure I'm not the only reader who finds that type of information very interesting and useful.

I'm hoping that someday folks can log on here and easily find information (via FAQ topic)regarding fuel/oil ratios for any make/year/model of outboard. I believe the ADMIN. folks are working on that. It will be a great benefit to many who don't realize that with today's high quality two stroke oil they could possibly run their older outboards at a considerably leaner ratio than what the original specifications call for.

Thanks again for the detailed explanation. I envy your knowledge...

Walt

Chinewalker

Great reply. I have another one for you. 1956 Johnson RJE 18 E 30hp. Do you know what bearings were used? I think the original specs called for 16 or 24 to 1.

Re: Gas/Oil ratio for 1954 Johnson 3hp?

Hi Fishnfun,
I'd stick with the 25:1 or 32:1 on the RD. I don't think they went to the needle bearing wrist pin journal until they went to the 35hp in '57 with the twin needle bearings, but I could be wrong. In any case, I'd keep it on the rich side - as they say, they ain't makin' 'em like that anymore....
- Scott
