Gas oil mixture

I have a 1983 Evinrude 15h.p. outboard. Calls for a 50 to 1 fuel ratio. How rich of a mix could I run. Would a little richer mixture be better? Runs fine now but wondering if a richer mixture would be better for a older motor.

No, Boge. Richer would not be better.

50:1 is ideal for high speed running. For trolling or idle speeds 100:1 would be better, or even 150:1.

Using the same mix at all speeds says that 50:1 is the safe mix.

The older engines that called for 24:1 or even 16:1 had sleeve type bearings that required more oil to cushion the bearings. Modern engines have needle and ball bearings that don't need the richer (smokey!) mixture.

Re: Gas oil mixture

thanks for the info. Just got the motor and started using it. Probably won't be trolling much.
