Gas (NOT WATER) in Oil

Update - upon farther review - this is gas in the oil, not water. I THINK that's better...I think...

I drained the crankcase last night. It's thin and watery, but black and smells like gas. (Earlier leakage wasn't enough to smell.)

I did not do the compression test yet. How does gas get in there?

Advised later that engine is a 4 stroke... I had assumed it was a 2 stroke. Comments deleted.

Joe..tho' he didn't restate it, I think he's referring to a 9.9 4 stroke...carb and fuel pump are about the only way for gas to get into the crankcase that I'm aware of

You are absolutely right AITn.

My apologies, I was just responding to my own earlier post - forgot to paste in the info!

1999 E-rude 9.9HP four stroke. New diagnosis?

Yes - broken in, etc. - it's true, though, that is is PRIMARILY used as my trolling kicker. I do open 'er up now and then, but mostly, it's idle-speed.

Try running it at wot for about 2 hrs and see what happens.

Ok - I know the suggestion was TWO hours - here's what I did: Ran 30 mins WOT - then changed oil again, "Just to see." Didn't seem like gas (still thick, like oil), but smelled faintly of gas (could still be left over?). THEN - new oil - then ran 1.5 HRS WOT, plus some no-wake zone for approx 10mins. Oil level did not seem to rise (after cooling it). Still smells faintly of gas. Consistency still seems like oil.
I have a 3-day trolling trip planned a week from now. Should I do or check something else? Run it more? It started right up (First start since fall), and ran like a champ, never a problem, and it was >90 degrees ambient. Doesn't seem like serious damage, at least. Thoughts?
