Update - upon farther review - this is gas in the oil, not water. I THINK that's better...I think...
I drained the crankcase last night. It's thin and watery, but black and smells like gas. (Earlier leakage wasn't enough to smell.)
I did not do the compression test yet. How does gas get in there?
