Does anyone have a chart or know how to make a chart showing the proper 50 to 1 mix amount for differant amounts of gas? My tank is'nt always empty and that makes it hard to get the mix right. If you go by whats on the bottle that does'nt always work ether.Thx. Herb

Re: Gas mix chart

I use one of the mix master bottles they are very handy to have. Mine has five different ratios including 50:1, so you pour the oil in the bottle for what gallonage gas you are using. It has incraments of 1/2 gallons of gas and tells the ozs. of oil each line represents. So if you can only fit 2.5 gallons into your tank simply go to the 50:1 section and pour oil in till it hits the 2.5 gal. gas line dump it in your tank and your done. I also use mine for my snowblower, dirt bikes, snowmobile, weedeater, etc. If you need to use more than the bottle can hold just figure it out with the ozs. or fill twice which is what I usually do.

Re: Gas mix chart

You can do this in your head. 50:1 is a pint in every six gallons. If you are adding 12 gallons you need two pints. If you are adding three gallons you add 1/2 pint. 18 gallons is a pint & 1/2.

Re: Gas mix chart

It's approximately 2.5 ounces of oil for every gallon of gas (it's actually 2.56 ounces, but I think you can round it off). I figured that out by taking 128 ounces (1 gallon) and dividing it by 50.

Here's a homemade chart:
Code:
[b]Gallons Ounces[/b]
1 2.5
2 5
3 7.5
4 10
5 12.5
6 15
7 17.5
8 20
9 22.5
10 25

Do as Silvertip says or use the chart provided by blouderback, but don't over-analyze it. You could probably miss the exact 50:1 by 50% and it would still be OK. J&E used to recommend 100:1 til they realized there wasn't enough residual oil left on the working parts between seasons to prevent corrosion. Just get close and give it an extra shot for good measure if it makes you feel better. BTW, it'll run just fine with 24:1, just a little more "essence".

"50:1" is from the advertisement department. The correct mix is actually 1 pint to 6 gallons of gas. Mathematically, that is 48:1, I believe. Anyhoo, it is 1/6th of a pint to a gallon (1/3rd of a cup). Steal one of your wife's measuring cups, they are usually marked in 1/3rds.

Yeah -- I used to stress over it til I got one of those mix bottles. Great stuff. Now I stress over just how much gas I poured out of the jerry can into the portable boat tank...:p

Gallons, pints, cups, ounces.... makes my head hurt trying to do all the conversions. That's why God invented the metric system. :)

I use a clear plastic measuring cup with lines scratched at every 1/3 cup. 1/3 cup = 50:1 @ 1 gal.. Pretty easy to interpelate the tenths.

Re: Gas mix chart

Wow. I'd forgotten how fortunate I was -- my boat has autoimatic oil injection, so I just keep the oil reservoir well above the 'add' mark, and the right amount is automatically added.

At home, for snowblowers, leaf blowers, chain saws, etc. I measured the ounces etc and found that a certain size of prescription pill bottle had the correct amount. Now I buy 2-cycle oil in quart or larger size (much cheaper) and can be confident I've got the right mix, or very close to it.

You got it - mixing 50:1 in metric is a no brainer. 1 liter of oil for every 50 liters of gas. Or 50 milliliters per liter of gas. I think. :)

Re: Gas mix chart

1 qt. = 32 oz

32/2.56 = 12.5

1qt of oil will treat 12.5gal of gas for a 50:1 ratio

Hey,thanks a lot guys. This is the first boat that I have owned that had the built in gas tank insted of the old standby 6 gallon job. Guess I just hit the panic button to soon insted of thinking it out.

...You can never stop thinking about safety.

Amen to that brother. It's a shame the human animal can't help itself when it comes to complacency. Do the same thing over and over again and eventually your brain goes on automatic and that's when the screwups occur. Especially where machinery is concerned.

I've just now finished shaking the snow off my boots after having a good think on this very topic while plowing snow on the ol tractor. I was out there about an hour and had gotten into a regular rhythm -- lower rear blade, shift into reverse, push snow down drive and across the street into the big snowbank; shift into neutral, raise blade out of the snowbank, shift into forward, head back up the driveway and repeat. Clutch, shift lever, blade lever, clutch, drive, clutch, shift lever, blade lever, clutch, drive,.....

Well sure enough, my mind starts wandering and after I've buried the blade in the snowbank on a run down the driveway and across the road, instead of grabbing the lever for the hydraulics to raise the blade, I grab the shift lever, put it in gear and try to move. Well, now I've got a couple hundred pounds of wet snow on the back and only enough throttle set to drive away empty. I am certainly not ready for the machine to lurch, almost stall, start spinning its wheels, gain some footing, nearly stall again and try to throw me over the hood.

It dawned on my that some relaxing seat time on the old Ferguson could see me falling and running myself over if I didn't quit daydreaming. I had to make a conscious effort to stop, think about what I was doing repeat the mantra correctly in my head and resume.

Yeah -- Sometimes the human brain is its own worst enemy.

Re: Gas mix chart

I always esitmate out how much gas the tank will accept, in three gallon increments. Then mix 1/2 pint oil to three gallons. You will always be less than three gallons from full, and you won't have messed up the ratio.
