I have a 1995 Yamaha 115 horse on a 23 ft. Hurricane deckboat. Near as I can figure I'm only getting about 3 or 4 miles to the gallon. Anyone have any suggestions what I SHOULD be getting and/or what could be causing this problem? Please keep it simple... I'm a female boater and readily admit I'm motor-dumb. Thanks !

Ahoy, Robin. That must be a very efficient-hull deckboat, and you must be very gentle with the throttle. I would expect that rig to deliver 2 to 2.5 mpg.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Re: Gas Milage

Robin,
On average most 2 stroke outboards burn about 10% of their horsepower in gallons per hour. For example, a 115hp should burn about 11.5 gallons per hour. This is assuming you are running a average weight hull. Your 23 footer is a bit on the heavy side for the 115 so its working harder and you should expect slightly worse fuel mileage. Thus the 2 to 2.5 mpg as mentioned by JB.

Boats cant be compared to cars. If you think about costs in MPG, it may take the fun out of Boating. Simply smile as you top the tank off before going out each time :D

Nav.

Thanks, guys, as long as I know there's not someting drastically wrong, I won't worry about it.
Let's hope the fuel prices stay down and happy boating!

Robin

Think yourself lucky you don't live where I live.

Gas is about $5.85 a gallon at present.
