Boat is a 14' Lund Laker with 20" transom. Has 25 hp Johnson and an electric trolling motor on that transom. I'm a newbie when it comes to boating. This will be my second year.

I want to replace the electric with a gas kicker. I want to do this because I will be taking the boat into Chequamegon Bay, WI once in a while. I don't want to risk a situation where my gas motor fails and depend on the electric to get to shore. Several locals recommend this as well.

I tried putting an 8hp 1996 Mercury on there, but it didn't fit. The top engine housings would hit each other.

Anyone out there with a boat like mine with a gas kicker? What's your setup?

Any opinions on the 2.3 hp Honda in this application? I'm in a remote area and I'd have to travel 160 miles to test fit a motor. If I have to, I will, but I'm hoping someone here has done this sort of thing already.

Thanks!

I would go with a bigger boat on lake superior.

A 14' boat doesn't need two motors; it needs one motor and two oars. An electric trolling motor is fine for its intended purpose of fishing, and if you already have one for fishing, to use for back-up power in the right conditions.

The fact that the transom won't fit two motors answers the question for you.

If you watch the weather, and know what your doing a 14 footer is doable, IF your very careful,...

I've put in at the sportsman's club ramp with a 16 footer and fished the Kakaugan Slough and even been out past Long Island on a calm day,...

The ramp by the power plant in Ashland also makes for shorts runs to good near shore fishing in a small boat,...

I've never put in up in Washburn, but I hear the fishing can be good there as well,...

If the wind is puffing stay home,........

Look at adding a fixed mounting bracket like the Garelick 71074 to gain some space. You can order here on iboats.

^^^^^^^ Probably your best bet, providing it doesn't make you extremely tail heavy.......

I'd have to say that IF you need two engines then you need an 18' plus boat...

two gas engines on a 14'er GENERALLY just doesn't work excluding small jet boats and the like
