Gas in Oil

I have a 2000 40HP Honda with a lot of gas in the oil. When I pulled the dipstick it poured out. The engine starts, runs and idles great. Other posts have said to check the fuel pump, thermostat, or carbs. Since it's running so good, I doubt that it's the carbs. How do I test or check the thermostat or fuel pump? Would this type of pump be able to inject gas right into the oil sump through a faulty diaphram? And I noticed that when it's running, saltwater leaks out the rubber gasket surrounding the oil pan drain plug??

I'll take a stab at this base on what I know.

Your statement about your "motor running so good and doubt it's the carbs." If this includes a good even fireing cold start, i'd rule out the carbs also.
A thermostat that impedes a proper operating temperature makes a rich mixture for sure. One that would cause a smelly exaust, high fuel consumption, and eventual oil contamination.
The fuel pump is mechanically operated by a pushrod to the camshaft. If the pump diapham develops a a small rupture, this would be the location that fair amounts of fuel could be introduced into the crankcase.
My wager is on the fuel pump.

The water around the drain access plate is another issue. I'm assuming your tell tail is working. If it isn't, it's possible the tube is disconnected and blowing water under the engine.

If the tell tail is working, I wouldn't be comfortable with this situation unless I pulled my drive leg and did a inspection of the water pump/pump housing and the water tube and orings.
Check all the plumbing for corrosion and integrity.

Hope this helps.
Return the favor buddhamouse by keeping us informed with what you find. ;)

Re: Gas in Oil

I replaced the fuel pump, and I will keep an eye on the oil level. It looks like the exhaust water just flows into the lower unit, so I'm hoping that water that I see draining out of the oil pan drain screw cover is just overflow.
Thanks for the advice.
