gas gauge running backwards

Hi<br />My gas gauge when empty the shows 3/4 full and as you add gas it goes towards empty. When the gas is used it goes back towards the 3/4 mark. I changed the gauge but the same result. Would appreciate any ideas. I have not changed the sending unit.<br />thanks

thanks will give that a try. The ground was not connected when I got the boat so the gauge was not working at all.
