gas gage

1988 seamaster WA Cuddy--gas gage only comes up to half when boat is on--not sure if this is the gage or the sending unit--and I am not much of a mechanic but I did want to try something before I brouht it to a mechanic---Ralph said to short the sender to the ground to see if the gage moves to full but i do not understand what he means I need simple english instruction step by step thanks!!!

To check the sending unit at the tank, connect a wire between ground and the sending wire on your tank, it should read full at the gauge, if it does, it is your sending unit. If not it is your wiring or gauge. Like Bondo said in your previous post, to check the gauge connect a wire between ground and the "s" terminal on your gauge, it should read full. If not it is your gauge. I had trouble with the float on my sending unit, I bought a sending unit like the one tylerin mentioned and the instructions were very clear. No more days wondering how much fuel is left. :)

thanks that worked --my gage was OK and my sending unit float ended up to be hung up. I am back in business
