Gas gage always shows empty

How can I test the sender? Are these sender units universal? Can they be repaired? My boat is a 1993 Sunbird and they have not be made for years.

They make universal senders to fit about any tank. Jump the 2 wires at the sender together,If the guage jumps to full then the sender is bad. Check all the connections at the sender and gauge..

On jumping the wires together, just touch them and as soon as you see movement disconnect them. Some meter movements are damaged if there isn't some external resistance in the ckt.....farm tractors are that way; dunno about boats....touching just for a second shouldn't hurt anything.
