Hi,wanted to find out how much fuel a 19-21 ft v8 cuddy would consume. With say 800 lbs gear and pass. N ote i sometimes have a heavy foot.I understand there are alot of variables involved, just looking for rough estiamite.I know how much fuel my 19 ft 4cyl cuddy uses.Should i just double what the 4 cyl uses?Thinking of buying newer boat with v8 for more powerWould mostly boat small lakes or may try ohio river or lake cumberland.Thank you in advance for the help.

Re: gas consumption of v8 cuddy

As a rule of thumb, an IO will burn roughly 0.1xHP gallons per hour (where HP is the horse power you are using) in gallons per hour. If you have a 135HP 4 cylinder and you are running near wide open, you will be using near 100 HP and your fuel burn will be near 10 Gallons per hour. Wide open - Near 13.5 GPH. This is not thottle setting, you have to guesstimate the HP you are using. Now if you have a V-8, the same rule applies. Say you have a 220HP 5.0l. At near wide open, you will burn near 18 to 20 GPH. Of course this means you will be going a lot faster or pushing a much larger boat the same speed. For the same size boat, the 8 cylinder should only burn slightly more fuel (due maily to increased weight and hence wetted hull area (more drag) and more internal drag in the engine itself) at the exact same speed.

when you narrow it down post the boat make and year..its hard to gauge fuel consumption by "just a V8" need more info.

For my boat, see my sig, I average 2.4mpg for a mix of cruising, in and out of no-wakes and the occasional WOT run. That average has been consistent over the last 3 years.

try googling your boat size etc and boat test .com usually can find a review, they list mpg as well as top speed.
your going to burn 2x the gas at wot then at cruising speed most boat have max mpg at around 3400 rpm

All good advice here . . . I think it is important on the test data to also compare like fuel systems. MPI to MPI, Carb to Carb etc. My boat has averaged 3.2ish with a similar operating mix to bekosh, MPI vs. carbed. Sorry bekosh, not a brag, but a clarifier, oh but my boat is 2 feet longer too :p :D

Oh, yeah, Silvertip has beat it into me that using MPG is risky if you are considering range, and I agree. So here's the disclaimer: Conditions can mess those numbers up a lot ;)
