I put this here so Elvin might see it.

I have a 3.3 merc, same as the 3.5 tohatsu. this motor runs great, shakes like *^$@ and has the worst gas cap of any motor I've had. It leaks any time the motor is tilted up, layed down, or is more than 3/4 full.

The problem is the gas cap is too large for threads on the tank, any time you tighten it to the point where it won't leak the slightest movement will pop it back one thread and it's lose again.

I don't want to buy another gas cap and find that I have the same issue and need to replace the tank, or maybe this is something that happens to most of them and i need to live with it. Not a bad little motor and I'd love to able to use it without smelling like gas all the time. I need to drain it completely every time I want to stow it on my large boat or take it any where.

You have either bad threads on the tank or the cap...So you need to replace one,the other or both. It won't leak if it's not damaged.

Thanks

That's whats odd about it, both cap and tank look to be perfect with no sign of damage. That's why I was thinking it may be a problem with the actual size of one or both parts and common to certain years of production. I'll order a cap and see if that solves the problem.
