Thinking about buying another boat. Has 48spl evinrude with gas assist trim. I also own another boat with same engine, but with power trim/tilt. Not at all familiar with gas assist & info online is sketchy at best. Anybody that can explain how this works would be helpful. When we tried to lift engine, no luck, as if we needed to push or pull a button or lever to release. How/what do I do or is is maybe frozen up. Since don't know what or how it works I am at a loss. Love the boat, love the engine. Stumped again....H..E..L..P!! please

Re: gas assist tilt

My guess would be that it is a manual tilt with a locking lever somewhere. The gas assist is one or two gas struts in the base that help carry the weight like the tailgate on an suv or minivan. I am just giving my guess as I reall don't know for sure so take it for what it's worth.

The gas assist cyl is probably frozen up which is very common and it costs big bucks to fix it. Try shop.evinrude.com, look up the mtr and you'll see.

Depending how much the cylinder costs to replace it may be time to convert to power tilt. I'm sure it's more than the strut but if it were me and I was spending a lot I'd just assume spend a bit more and retrofit for power.
