I bought the 73sv and am installing it 2 work on 2 different boats I want it to work at on plane speeds as well for depth. Does anyone have any experience with doing this. I have other transducers on the boat now from old units I will post images below. I can leave these on the boat or remove them and put 3m 4200 fast cure on the holes and put the screws back in not real picky about the looks just want it to work. I put arrows pointing to where I am thinking about mounting them at. Will be using 3m 4200 fast cure on both for the screws to seal it up don't plan on changing them so not really worried about using a plate. I have considered it though. Just want to make sure I am thinking this through correctly so the side imaging and high speed depth will work.

Thanks for any advice.

remove the old transducers if your not using them

read the instructions on the garmin. it is very clear. high speed works best if there is nothing under the hull that can cause turbulence (bubbles)

you got a second transducer for the second boat, correct?

Thanks for your reply. The first one I plan on removing the speedo and the other unit if I get the garmin to work at high speed in that spot. If I am not mistaken it has a gps speed on the new garmin unit so really don't need the one in the dash to work anymore. only thing that worries me about that one is the location is almost in front of the motor will that affect the cooling for the motor at all you think.

For the second one I was planning on removing the speedo also for the same reason not needed anymore and also removing the old units it is cheep eagle anyway.

Can I just plug the old holes with the 4200 and smooth it out will that work or maybe use some jbweld.

Yes got a second transducer, mounting bracket and power cord.

I wouldn't remove the pitot tube speedo pickup.

I would mount in the same locations you had the old transducers mounted

Will the side imaging go through the speedo pickup or will that interfere.

I just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in here. I just installed an echoMAP 43DV on my boat. On my boat, I put the transducer right about where your old transducer is in the 1st pic (in relation to the motor / boat center). The down view worked well and so did high speed depth. Also, my transducer is literally touching the pitot bracket and I don't have any issues with the down view - I really can't comment on how it would affect side view as the beam works differently than down view (based on what I understand)...it appears in the 2nd boat (2nd pic) if you mount it where you pointed that it would be lower than the pitot anyway...

There is a GPS speed on the echoMAPs. The fishfinder was right on with the speed compared to my pitot (I know you mentioned potentially removing the old pitot)...I suppose you could try it with the pitot on there and if it doesn't work, flip the pitot up prior to removing it to see if there is any change (???). Just a suggestion - Garmin was helpful when I had the below issue but it did take them 3 full days to respond to my e-mail.

The only issue I ended up having was that I got a rooster tail spray coming straight up from where the transducer was installed when on plane / faster speeds. In doing some research, I found that others tended to have that problem too - Garmin ended up making a splash guard to help with that; I just made my own with an old cutting board - I have yet to test it. The transducer of the 43 vs. 73 is a different model but the shapes appear nearly identical.

Thanks Twhjelmgren28 for your valuable input. My guy at Denver Marine that works on my motor said not to mount it down beside the drain plug he said that was a big no no. He give the 3 reasons why and they where exactly what I was thinking also. Get broke, mess with water flow to motor making it run hotter and probably kicking up a lot. He told me to mount it where the old one is at on the bass boat. I haven't got it mounted yet but I did mount the starboard on the Grumman boat today and will be finishing the install in the morning on it. Will update more with pictures when I get the install finished and working good for other people to reference.
