I have a 478 version of GPS map and works very well on water. My boat does not have too much open space between dash and windshield so this unit is a perfect size for typical sport boat such as bowriders. I do not believe 276c come with detail marine map so you need to purchase a U.S. marine detail maps.

I bought my 276C for the boat and later added the auto package. I have been very happy with it in both applications.

I use Mapsource's US Recreational Lakes for marine use and City Navigator V8 for road use.

Additional firmware can be added by preprogarammed card or loaded from a CD/DVD. I use the CDs and have 2 cards that I could program, but find that one 256M card holds all the maps, etc. that I want on one trip.

The later versions have added features but, of course, you will have to pay more for them.

I had a Garmin 276C w/ the land & sea package. Loved it. The screen was daylight visible. Good detail. Used it to get to the water and on the water.

I was frustrated with having to buy updated map sets that were not really updated. The display was small but convenient. Interaction with the unit is not real easy.

Good technology when it was released. Probably the best multi-role gps at the time. More modern units have more memory. Faster start-ups. Larger screens. And, touch screens.

I am still using my old Garmin 176C w/bluewater chart maps. I really like it even though it is outdated, but really serves my purpose.
