garmin fishfinder 160

I bought a boat with this fishfinder on it. (garmin fishfinder 160) It's a trolling motor transducer style. I can't seem to get the unit to pick up the transducer being connected. When a transducer is not connected, it automatically starts in simulator mode. I went thru and looked at connections and where it plugs in to the main unit all looks good. But for some reason it's not registering. By the looks of the manual I found online, everything looks right. I just really don't want to drop a $100 on a 'ducer if it's something else.

Any ideas? How often do transducers go bad?
