Hi im considering the above unit as it seems like a good package (although maybe a little pricey!)
The question i have is this unit as good as a dedicated fish finder? as say the garmin 400c?

The Garmin 400C is a 500W unit. The 7XX is a 1 kW unit. Comparing tool to machine. No comparison in sonar performance.

The grip with Garmin has alway been there sounder performance. To put it mildly, it sucked.

About a 8 months ago they released an update to start addressing some of the issue which was a big improvement. Still not on par with Furuno, but much better than in the past. This Spring they released the GSD26 black box sounder. The GSD 26 is a black box, state of the art CHIRP sonar technology for use with the Garmin MFD units like the 7XX series in question. The GSD 26 is not cheap, but one of the best you can buy right now.

Ok right,

Now im a little confused... bare with me im a little new to this, im after a GPS system as where i fish and boat there are a lot of sand banks and reefs that i dont want to hit. and i also want to catch heaps of fish!! i saw the garmin 720s as a model that would get the best of both worlds. but on comparrison im not sure it has all the features of a dedicated (fishfinder) unit.
Um as for sounders i know little about these i thought they were a more broader beam that gave you more detail when it came to the sea bed etc not for finding fish as such.
as i said im new to this and i do have a friend that can supply me garmin at a cheaper price.
Any feed back much appreciated!!!
in an ideal world what is best for what im after??

Cheers
Mike

Re: garmin 750s fishfinder/gps

aah maybe i should have looked up the gsd 26 before replying to the last post, the gsd 26 looks pretty awesome but maybe more for the deep water fisherman than somebody like myself hitting reefs banks channels etc ???
i only have a 18 ft fibreglass so not really hitting the blue water mark.
again any feed back is much appreciated!
and i really wanna catch fish!
