Re: Garmin 740s networking
The fuel sensor has two cables coming out of it. One cable (~6' lg.) is the NEMA 2000 connector on the end. They supply a short pigtail connector so you can wire Can Net to the connector. The other end of the Can Net cable gets wired into one of the data ports on the back of the unit.
The other cable (~25?) is a 5 conductor wire if I remeber correctly. It contains the wires to the fuel gauge, 12V power with fuse holder, ground and the orange accessory wire that get connected to the accessory wire on the MFD. If it wasn?t for the orange wire, you could wire the fuel gauge wires directly to the sending unit and grab the 12 VDC directly from the battery to negate the need to run the cable up to the helm.
There is no reason why you couldn?t use the CAT cable suitable for the environment and 120 ohm resistors if you could find them. I went to 3 different stores and couldn?t find the 120 ohm resistors. Buy the time I bought 20? of tinned CAT cable and spent another $10 in fuel looking for the resistors, I figured I?d be ahead just buying the stuff and having it delivered to the house.
As far as the power is concerned, you need power either way. The only difference is when NEMA, you don't need to run the orange accessory wire to the MFD like you do with the Can Net.
