Without a (discontinued) transducer it is just a basic GPS. No SONAR.

I wouldn't pay $200 for it.

Only the head unit has been discontinued. A new transducer will run you ~$100.

The unit comes preloaded with maps of the coast so you will need to purchase additional maps if you want to use the unit on the waters in question. Figure another $200 for maps so you now have $500 in to a $600 discontinued unit.

With maps, $200 for the unit wouldn't be a deal. W/o maps, forget it.

A new Transom Mount Transducer for the 178c is $65 from garmin.

The 178c Head Units Only are selling for $400 Used on eBay.

The internal Base Maps are usually fine for basic "find your way home" navigation.
The Add on Maps add finer detail.
The Garmin Inland Lakes Maps are $99.

For $365 or less you could be in business.

It originally sold for $500+ without the additional Maps.

good luck with your garmin. I have a 178c also and have been pleased with it but it has developed a big gold spot in the middle of the screen. If you decide to get rid of yours please let me know.

Re: Garmin 178c gpsmap / sounder

Hi all; I have a gpsmap 178 (not color) and has worked great for years. I just upgraded to humminbirds on my boat and don't need this one now. I do have a problem though. I erased my data card with all my waypoints in it and tried to reload one of the maps for TN./ KY region 10 I think, but the unit keeps giving an error "cannot unlock maps". I can put way points on it and transfer them, but it won't unlock a map. Anyone had this issue, and know,of a work around I would appriciate it. I hate to sell a unit that might have something wrong with it. Besides that it works great. I have the cables, map source CD (copy) and maps of region 10 and texas with usb data card reader, cover, mounting bracket and transducer. If anyone would like it as is, and knows how to get around this error, I'll let it go for $200.00 Oh, it has some sillicone around the edges where it was mounted in my bow. Nothing a little elbow grease won't get off though. I can send pics to anyone interested. Email @ maxfli11@bellsouth.net
