I really am not to sure which way to go here, I like the eagle fish finding capabilties and garmin's gps screen's.

The unit wil be used in 15-70' of water, sometime's brackish most not. I was sold on the Garmin but i am not quite sure if it's fish finder side is a good as Eagle product

Any opinion's here???

I have a Garmin 188 and its fish finder is great. I fish in 4 -100ft of water, mainly salt. The gps side of it is even better and so easy to use. So I'm a fan of the Garmin. That's my opinion for what its worth as I've not tried the Eagle.

i just read a review about the Garmin 188c. The guy has a fleet of charter boats and outfitted them all with the Garmin 188c and other Garmin products. His biggest problem with them is that the screens coatings come off too easy and leave your screen hard to see. He would recommend Garmin to no-one.

I would go with Garmin. I have a Eagle 480DF that went bad at about 16 months, so outside any warranty and they want $90.00 flat Rate to fix it. That is probably very close to what they sell the new unts to disrubtors for. I filed for extended warranty coverage from my AMEX card. Hopefuly the will come through for me. They said it will take a couple of weeks. So, for that reaso I would go w/another brand a Garmin is a good name, I have a Garmin GPS unit that is almost 5 years old now and works great.

Like you, I like Eagle sonar and Garmin GPS. I have an Eagle Sonar (Cuda 168 ) and a Garmin GPS (276C) on my boat.

I think it would depend on which feature you use most if you insist on a combo unit, but would recommend seperate units.

Re: Garmin 178 or Eagle 480 Elite

Here is what I have learned in electronics purchasing. The more things combined together in a unit, the quality of each thing combined is not as well made as buying individually. Do not buy combination units. You'll get a better gps and a better sonar/fishfinder if you buy two separate units. I would not buy a combination gps/fish finder. I would buy a separate gps and fishfinder, you'll get much better quality....of both....
