Had to return a Garmin 176C which I bought because I could not see the screen in bright sunlight unless the boat was positioned with the sun shining directly on the screen.

I need a compact unit since I have a flats boat with limited space.

Both the Gamin units claim to be visible in direct sunlight, and of course look good in the store (as did my 176C).

I need to hear from users how satisfied you are with these units so I can decide which fits me best. Thanks.

I don't know of any color screen that is clearly visible with sun directly on it, Foxden, though almost all makers claim they are.

A monochrome LCD screen uses reflected light and is MOST visible with sunlight directly on it.

A Garmin 182 or 188 (monochrome version) would work, and has all of the performance, but less sizzle, of the 172C or 176C for less bux. The screen is larger, too.

I purchased the Garmin 276C for the color screen and visual spectrum. This unit has performed superbly mounted on my center console fishing boat, and on other boats I've been on.

I find the color screen easier to read than monochrome - you have more flexibility in adjusting the backlight with the color unit, than you do with a monochrome!

Very pleased with the Garmin276C!!!

Re: Garmin 172C vs. Garmin 276C

I have a Garmin 276C. I liked this model the best, because for a portable, it has the biggest display. My boat is a tiller steering model so it is mounted next to my garmin 240 sonar (monochrome display) about knee high when seated. I have the screen angled up to be able to see it while under way. I have not had any problems seeing the screen, however depending on the angle the sun hits it, it can be more or less visible. I do agree with JB, monochrome display offers the best visibility. All things considered I am very happy with this GPS.
