I'd have to check mine, but I believe it has a "Offroad" mode which would show your tracks. No lake map options that I know about.

GPS is GPS. It will plot your position if you are in a car, boat, airplane, or up a tree but whether the map contained in the unit has the waterway you are on is the question you should be asking. A GPS doesn't even need a map in it to be used effectively. You just need to know the coordinates of where you want to go and the obstacles between you and your destination. While hunting or hiking for example you set the unit so it leaves a sugar trail. Hit track back and follow the path to get home.

I have one just like it.
Just go to your favorite fishing location and save that location and name it.
It should work just fine and you will be able to find that exact spot again easily.

I think you can, Garmin does have the map. Go to Garmin's website and look for the inland waterway map update for your boating area (there's several last time I looked) and see if it's available for your model. I think it's $75.00.

Link to upgrade maps to marine--https://buy.garmin.com/shop/buymaps.do

As mentioned...it will work simply by bringing it with you on the boat. I've used a Garmin car GPS as my boat's speedo, compass, hour meter, odometer, etc. and it's great.

My favorite function is when you touch the speedometer reading on the map screen and it takes you to a new screen that shows max mph, avg mph, total miles travelled, total running time, and more.

It will show a big blue area but no contours unless you buy a marine upgrade for about $100.

I'm considering buying the Michigan marine upgrade for my Garmin, it bascally turns it into a marine GPS for far less cost than a pre-packaged unit.

The only downside is that they do not have the best method for attaching to a boat. I lost an olde unit last summer in the depths of Lake Huron in some 3-4' waves when the suction cup let go from the pounding.

I will be devising a method to keep it onboard when I bring my new one on the boat.:)

I recently bought a Ram Mount for my Lowrance XOG. No way my GPS is going into the drink unless the boat sinks or overturns. They make a mount for your Garmin. Check here.

Thanks for the link, they are only 20 bucks too so I will get one and secure it for sure.:)
