A friend is trying to troubleshoot his opener (single car garage door) and we're both kind of stumped at the following symptoms:

>If you press and release the wall-mounted button inside the garage with the door open the motor will attempt to move the door via the chain drive but stops after about six inches, reverses back to its full open position, then the light inside the unit will flash rapidly five or six times and the thing shuts down.

>If you press and hold the wall-mounted button the motor will close the door just fine, however if you release the button at any time during its closing the motor will stop, reverse, open the door fully again and shut down. Again the integrated light in the unit will flash multiple times. If you hold the button til the door reaches full closed it will stop and stay shut just fine.

>If you use the remote to close the door, the light in the opener will flash without the motor even budging the door.

>If you pull the disconnect cord to release the chain drive you can slide the door open and closed manually as easy as you like with minimal effort so there's no significant binding or jam I can detect.

>Adjusting the opening or closing force screws appears to have to no effect.

Any ideas? I'm assuming the flashing interior light is trying to indicate some kind of problem but the manual for the unit is long gone. Actually, the thing has not worked since he bought the house several years ago and since that time has just used the door manually.

If this unit has the electric eyes (infared sensors)pointing across the door opening, they are either blocked by an object, out of alignment or defective.Bad or blocked sensors will prevent an open door from closing and cause a closing door to open. The lights flashing are an indication that there is a problem with the sensors.Hope this helps.

Yup it is the door sensor. Blocked, dirty, broken wire or it has been bumped and it is not aligned.

Thanks, gents -- I'll tell him to have a look at those electric eyes.

It is your photo eyes, You will have a Amber light on one(sender) and a green light on the other(receiver). The green on is probably blinking. Look at it good
because it could be just slightly out of alinement. There should be a wing nut on it all you have to do is losing it and then move in up or down until it glows
steady.

These guys are correct. The sensors are out of alignment. I have the same opener. If they get bumped or something is in the way, the symtoms you posted is what happens. The sensors keep the door from closing on top of a car or child etc. Thats what there there for. If he has his manual, it will show you what the flashing codes are for the light that is flashing.

At certain times of the year, the sun shines directly into my sensors and prevents the door from closing. Only happens at certain days, and certian times of day!

Also if it still has the rope attached on the side see if it might be too long. One of my doors was doing that because as it closed it put a little bit of loop in it and got in the beam.

To help alien these eyes use a white peice of paper, to see beam, folow from transmitter to reciever. If able do when darker.
