Yes I have, fortunately only a few times. I guess I would have tried to catch a 40" gar too, but generally, they are considered rough fish here, and a pain in the arse! LOL

Where I live in WI, these fish are somewhat common on the Winnebago chain of lakes. I have also accidentally caught them on other smaller inland lakes

When I lived in FL the gar would bite pretty aggressively however here in TN I can't or haven't been able to get them to take the bait. I have rolled the lure right over their heads before and still no strike.

Re: gar

Take about 10" of small diamter rope. Soak several sections of this in a can of wet dog food. Tie one of these sections of rope to the end of your fishing line. Find some gar schooled up (usually isn't difficult, just go bass fishing and you'll find gar).
Just cast it out and work it like a plastic worm.

Gar will nip it and can't get their teeth out of it. It's alot of fun, aside from the end of the fight. I usually just cut my fishing line at the boat and tie on another piece of rope.

I was fishing in the Occoquan River in Virginia and caught a 31 inch 5.25lb Long Nosed Gar. I was using a Boowah Boogie bait. This was the best fighting fish I have evr caught in the many years of fishing. I would love to catch more and will now aggresively search for more Gar. Unfortunately I was 9 inches short of a trophy fish but still had the best time ever bringing this fish into the boat.

I hate them bait robbers worse than turtles. Dont try to land one in your net, that is a real mess!

I chase them with a fly here in MI, same story, follow almost to the boat and turn back. I did get a big boy like that to hit once, but couldn't get the hook set well. Splashed like all hell and was gone.
