The seal is supposed to seal on the ujoint shaft from the upper gear box that slides onto that shaft, not the splined shaft in the bellhousing. You didn't expect it to seal on those splines on the bellhousing shaft did you?

Forgot to mention those little springs. They belong on the lip seal and usually fall off when removing the old seal.

Kevin, (and you need to log in also) the spring keeps tension on the lip of the seal.

The springs are factory installed on the seals. They are positioned on lip of the seal so the sealing surface of the seal retains a tight fit.
