Gamefisher 9.9 questions

I found this at an auction....for the price, figgered it's worth playing with. Was told it doesn't have spark but does have good compression. That's about all I know. So....I'd like to get an idea of year, where to find parts (no air filter assembly over carb), fuel mixture and so forth.

Model: 217-586231

Serial: 8M 334121

Not sure of mixture, probably want to replace the prop, will change plugs, and if still no spark, need to get an idea of where to find coils (NAPA?)....

Thanks in advance......now I have something to play with this weekend......

Re: Gamefisher 9.9 questions

79 9.9 built by Eska ,out of business.Solid state ignition both problematic, difficult to get parts, and expensive. You might try certified parts corp and do a search for Eska parts.Eska 9.9 model numbers 14109B and 14136B.Can't tell you why different numbers. Before doing any major work you might want to check compression and inspect the impeller.
Ignition parts::2 ignition modules,2 high speed ignition coils,2 low speed ignition coils,2 ignition transformer coils. There are centrifugal timing advance parts. If it was mine I would resell or part it out on ebay.
I did notice some ignition timing tools by Tecumseh Products Company
perehaps they may have info on the ignition.

Re: Gamefisher 9.9 questions

Interesting info. Thank you. Being as it's a '79, fuel ratio is 50:1? I'll check compression, hook up water to it and see what happens. Per the paint on the motor itself, every bolt and screw is coated with original paint - nothing has ever even back taken apart on it....or else the whole thing has been re-dunked.....don't think so though......

Re: Gamefisher 9.9 questions

My limited experiebce with Eska motors has been that they sit alot because they are not the most reliable performers.I bought one that was over 20 years old and still had the original plug with blue paint overspray on it.

Re: Gamefisher 9.9 questions

Solid state ignition parts, with the exception of the externally mounted coils (Eska calls them transformers) are simply not available as new parts. It's that simple. Occasionally good parts from under the flywheel show up, but they typically cost more than the outboard is worth....each.

If you have no spark, and swapping external coils out does not solve the problem, you have a parts motor, I'm afraid. I've been looking for two years for one part needed for mine. Absolutely no luck at all.

All the NOS stuff is gone, since that is the failure point on those engines, and there are a lot of them out there. There just aren't enough to warrant a third-party company re-engineering the system.

Generally, it is the electronics module that fails. Those are sealed in potting compound. I don't know of anyone who has taken the trouble to carefully dismantle them and re-engineer them. Too bad. The blocks and design of the basic engines is quite nice. While mine was running, it was smooth, quiet, and appeared to make an honest 10 hp.

Now, they're 30 years old. The company's been out of business almost that long. I'm afraid Eska owners with solid state ignition systems are, simply, hosed.
