newbie here...quick question... i have a 1980 GF, starts up with a quick spray of starter fluid...... then conks out.... cleaned the carb, put it back on and now.... seems to be tooo much gas gettting into the motor....dripping out of the exhaust outlet on the lower unit...could this be in the fuel bowl/needle valve issue? any suggestions on why it is pushing thur too much fuel and not staying started?

More than likely it is float or float valve related.

I may be confusing this engine with another (ESKA, Ted Williams, etc..)but I seem to recall these engines having an oddball fuel pump system. The fuel pump is orange in color and looks like a condom for a very small pygmie. If this piece tears, which is common, the engine will flood.

I've got one of the same or similar motors. The carb kits are currently readily available from discount marine and on ebay. The rebuilt was fairly simple. It's a little tricky because the flat side of the rubber hickey thingy fuel pump element needs to directly face the hole below the fuel pump which means it should be installed at about a 45 degree angle. This is what I was told and it worked for me... still a pain in the butt motor, runs poorly at slow speeds. It will get me there and back but have to run too fast to do any trolling. Mine is going to a flea market or craig's list....starts easy and runs good (wide open)...

And,,, don't get carb cleaner on the orange fuel pump element or it will be ruined.

I've also found that both of my Gamefisher motors had dirty, pitted points. I took them out and gave them a good sanding with emery cloth, reinstalled and set on .020 gap. Both motors run extremely better. The 7.5 only runs with 1/2 choke on.... gotta figure out why?????
