Gamefisher 7.5 hp driveshaft

I've got the lower unit taken off from the motor (done to inspect the water pump) and I'm having difficulty either reassembling the unit (to land the geared driveshaft in the receiver) or, something was disconnected in the gear selector that is keeping the motor out of gear when the motor runs.

Anybody with any ideas??

if you figure it out before I do, could you please post the solution anyways? Thanks.
