Hey Guys 1st post and I hope you guys will be able to help me out. I bought this outboard well used but running strong this past spring. It starts faithfully on the first or second pull. Good strong compression and plenty of push for my little canoe.
Had it out yesterday and it started right up as usual, I let it have a minute or two to warm up a bit before give it gas. Finally throttled up and she pushed us for a few hundred yards down this canal. After a bit it sorta choked out like it was starving for fuel. The vent on the tank cap was opened. I checked the fuel shut off valve and it was open as well.
I had to take the trip at idle with the outboard just barely getting us to our destination. On the return trip it again acted fine at idle but then throttled it would rev up then sound as if it was starving for fuel. reduce the throttle and it idles fine again. The tide in the canal dropped quite a bit on our way back in and I ended up drifting into shallow water and hitting a stump and bending the bronze shear pin slightly.
This evening I hung it up and went to replace the shear pin, when I removed the prop I found the pin to be slightly bent and about 75 - 100 Yds of fishing line deep to the shear pin, wrapped around the spindle.
After removing the fishing line and replacing the shear pin for a new one, I replaced the prop and its retaining cotter pin.
With this done, I wanted to see iff it would sound the same so I started it. Now since this is an air cooled engine with no water pump I assumed I could start it out of water and not cause any damage, Is this correct? So, I did it any way, If I find from you guys I can cause damage, I wont again, but I did and again it idled fine but now when I increase the throttle (dry) It sounds like something just under the power head at the superior or upper end of the shaft. Now I think thats where the sound came from, once I heard it I shut the engine down and besides with that sound I wasnt putting my face closer for fear that it would explode in my face.
The cowl covering the power head is black and says Gamefisher 3.0 Automatic Drive. Its a long shaft outboard.
Model # 298-586190.
Serial # C1 917 23.
Any information you guys could provide would be greatly appreciated.
I could really use any leads on a parts supplier as well as a schematic or exploded view of all the parts.
Thanks in advance guys or gals as the case may be.....
