galges in driveshaft

The driveshaft in my lower unit (alpha one) has some galges in it from a pipe wrench. The galges are where a seal rides in the upper unit. It will tear my seals up in its current condition. Somebody put a pipe wrench on it instead of the Merc tool to take off the pinion gear nut. Why they put the wrench right there I have no idea; they could have moved it down a few inches and it would have been fine! Has anyone ever heard of someway to file it and fill it? I know I could replace the shaft, but they are expensive, and I got too much money in this boat!

I haven't seen that one yet but we take shafts to a local hydralic shop for repair from seal damage you might try one of them and see what they could do---Bob

dixieboater165, i think i just had a similar situation with my pre-alpha. though i just had seal wear myself at the seal on the upper. damage none the less. anyways, i don't know how mine has turned out yet. but i speedi-sleeved it. got two hours on it w/o problems. though that ain't much time, so i don't really know how it will turn out for the long haul. but perhaps you might want to think about that idea. cheaper than a driveshaft for sure.

yes a speedie sleeve will work I used one on my 1961 <br />OB years ago sill works fine. If the shaft is to screwed up (I HOPE ITS NOT) you can take it to a maachine shop and see if thay can ceramic coat the wear spot over the seal area.this may sound crazy but we do it here at work all the time and the seal will not cut in to the shaft after that coating is done. It might be less expensive then a new shaft.
