I have read that johnson/evenrude engine parts are interchangeable I need a repair manual to trouble shoot the engine I have found this book. OLD OUTBOARD MOTOR SERVICE MANUAL, VOLUME 2, PRIOR TO 1969 at this link http://www.repairmanual.com/marine/31 before i buy this book I would like to know if anyone has this manual and is it any good.

Re: Gale sovereign 40 hp

Your motor is not a 1964, it is a 1962. It is sort of a mix-and-match combination of various years and models of Johnson and Evinrude. Taking great liberty of description here, it would compare to a 33hp J/E with 40hp pistons.

That is an Intertech generic manual. They are OK for most work that a novice is lkely to do. Better would be the factory manual. You might find one of those for a J/E 33hp on e-bay. New ones are pricey.

Re: Gale sovereign 40 hp

thanks a bunch. took a better look at the engine today tore apart the carb. looks like the needle and float need to be replaced. neighbor also said that he got it to turn over but would only run for 15- 20 secs then it dies. good thing that i found that the starter still works and the water pump still works. although the solenoid that runs the auto choke is burnt out. i would like to try and replace it though.

If anyone knows of a similar solenoid please let me know.
I also need to know the oil/gas mixture for this engine.
any good tips on what to check first on this engine will be greatly appreciated.
