I might be a day late and a dollar short here but I just made a discovery that relieves years of frustration. That is the ability to insure that that a new link opens in a new page.

When opening a new web page, from a link on the original page, it would appear to be capricious as to whether the new page would overwrite the original or open in a new window. Sometimes the original page might have several links that you would like to pursue.

If the original was overwritten, it would often be impossible to go back to the original, sometimes one that you found in a laborious search. Some web pages seem to lock you in, prohibiting your return to the original page. Sometimes you may go on a journey, accessing successive links in each new page, until you are many pages past your original base page. It then becomes quite laborious to go back, a page at a time, even if you are able to do so.

To insure a 'new window', right click on the link and choose 'open a new window'. That insures that your base page will remain open and available.
