fwd and rev backwards after LU re-assembly

1971 9.8hp model 110 merc splines only line up with shifter in reverse. After assy shifter is backwards. Can not assemble with neutral/neutral or fwd/fwd. The shift shaft blank spline doesn't line up with shift gear on motor. Also, the shift shaft will only lineup one way into LU, that being blank spline towards water pump or prop. Re-assembly is easy but, It's all backwards. HELP!!

Did you have the gear case disassembled i.e. the shift shaft and shift cam removed? Then you may have installed the shift cam upside down.
