I have had two stereo systems on my boat, and they both have been very poor. They are very "treblicious" with no range at all. They are quiet and generally just don't sound good. I'd like upgrade to a decent sound quality stereo. I'm not an audiophile, and I do not want to break the bank building a thermonuclear stereo. I also don't want to **** off everyone else on the Atlantic with my music. I just want something that sounds great when I'm cruising at 30 knots. Furthermore, when my wench is aboard, she is the DJ and bartender, so I'm going to mount it on her side of the boat. I really like this head unit:

Fusion True Marine Stereo Ms-Ip700 - iboats

What speakers do I need to buy to compliment this head unit? I have 2 DUAL brand 6" speakers right now that have atrocious sound quality. I also have two standalone enclosures that look like they're factory stock from 1990. I'd like to go with 4 or 6 new speakers. I don't want to mess with installing an amp or a sub. I just want 4-6 quality speakers that are compatible with this stereo system.

This is the boat they'll be going on.

I don't know what you will end up with, but just to get an idea what I did with my 96 Chevy pickup which had a stock radio in it which I replaced with an after market radio, it was better but not to good sounding so I replaced the speakers with 3 way after market speakers and added a bazooka to the system under the back seat and wow what a difference in the sound, in your case some good marine 3 way speakers might work with the bazooka, the sound is indescribable and no comparison to the stock setup. Be sure to read your new radios manual to see what impedance your radio requires as some use 4 ohm and some use 8 ohm speakers or some other ohm by now if your replacing the speakers as it does make a difference on the sound quality....

Wow. I didn't know they even made bazooka tubes anymore. That is actually a genius idea. It would be perfect for my application. I just have one issue with it. I take my boat out on the atlantic at times, and it can be pretty rough. I wonder if the bazooka tube is robust enough to survive more than just a couple outings with it.

Re: Fusion stereo upgrade

Bazooka makes a marine version, even one with a built-in amp. I'm looking forward to getting one for my boat. I have 2 sets of bazookas that are at least 20 years old, in my trucks, and they work just like they did when they were new. Did have to get the surrounds replaced a couple of years ago though.

Re: Fusion stereo upgrade

I put a simple, inexpensive (Wal-mart) Bazooka powered sub in my truck to make up for the 4" factory speakers lack of any bass and it works great.

Re: Fusion stereo upgrade

It all depends on the coin you want to drop into the system. I just installed a full JL audio system with 10 inch free air sub and Clarion MD6 headunit. Found the best deals on all types of sites to piece it together but for 4 component speakers, 10in free air sub, amp and head unit it ran me 1100 ish.. i cant remember anymore. The reason i went all out is that my 50hp outboard isn't a performer so i needed something that when anchor would look and sound good. Now there was a guy that posted on my thread and i used to talk stereo with and he was quite informative. I will try to find his user name again... but he had some good equipment he loved and it was on the cheaper side rather than going all name brand like i did. Ill post back if i can find the guy

Re: Fusion stereo upgrade

I as well went with JL Audio for the speakers and I purchased the M400/4 class D amp as well. I went with the 10" sub with an enclosure and M770's (7.7") coaxials.

JL makes the MX series of coaxial Speakers that are a little less than the M series. The MX's are designed for stock head units. Others will tell you, don't skimp on speakers.

Also, this may be an option for that head unit. Then you can install the head unit in your Cuddy as opposed to the cockpit.
