Hello All,
I need to know if it is a common design to find that the charging system is fused? I ask because I can't imagine it NOT being that way. I have a friend that has a 150hp evinrude, after about 2 hours of use, the 12v battery now reads 6v and dropping. Obviously the charging system is not charging. But he can disconnect the battery and the engine continues to run. Hmmmm Sounds to me like the battery just isn't getting charged and is draining. Could there be a fuse that blew and is stopping the battery from getting charged???

Ideas anyone

Thanks in advance

Re: Fused charging system... Common???

I think you are talking about an outboard on the i/o message board... I'm not familiar with this engine but the symptoms are like having a bad rectifier or voltage regulator, it it is worse it could be a stator. Most outboards will continue to run with no battery connected. Every manual I've read states not to disconnect the battery with motor running or damage to the charging system can occur. Also, connecting the battery cables backwards can blow all kinds of expensive stuff. As far as having a fuse, I don't know but it shouldn't be much trouble to chase that one down to find out.

If the engine was operated without the battery connected, there is probably at least a blown rectifier.

Opps. Your right, wrong board. But some may be interested in knowing the fix regardless... This motor was overhauled and ever since then the battery never would charge. I found that one of the stator leads (a yellow one) was "PAINTED" during the overhaul and then reconnected with black paint over the contact area. Thus, the stator never made connection and the battery never would charge. Cleaned the contact and all is right with the world again. :D
