Hi all!

I posted a message not long ago that i had problems when my engine wouldn't start anymore - no spark. It's a 3.0 Volvo with a brand new DELCO HEI distributor. The coil was also new. Now, the problem is, when i stop the motor, it won't start - the spark is gone. I tryed to change the electronic module and the thing worked so i thought i solved the puzzle. Now the problems came back - same symptoms. So i thought: either the coil or the distributor itself. As a last resort, i tried to change the wire going from the distributor to the coil (2 pins) - i had a brand new one from the new distributor, but i used the old one in the wire harness. The thing started right away! Hmmm... was this causing the trouble? What do you think? The number on the cable is 7982 - and i noticed that something is integrated into that cable (a fuse perhaps)? Any ideas? What else should i check?

Thanx for all the great ideas in advance,

Alex

I just found out (by searching throught the posts) that the thing integrated into the wire is the filter? Most probably a condenser? Could it be that the condenser is causing all the trouble? The thing is, the engine keeps running if i leave it on. If i turn it off, the spark is gone - it never actually stalls the engine. Any ideas? PLEEASE? I want to tow my boat like 500km next week, so i don't want to tow it all the way back :)

test for 12 volts at the purple wire on the coil connector when cranking. also carefully test the pick up coil in the dist. by HEI I will assume its actually the EST. HEI went out of production some years ago and was never used by volvo. there are some corrosion issues with the solder joints on the pick up coil.

Will do. The distributor is brand new, it's a DELCO REMY VOYAGER - it came with the new GM engine. I think i should get a osciloscope to get a good reading.

When cranking, i get 10.8V on the purple wire. The resistance is 0.8KOhm on the pickup coil. Is that good or bad?

I think i got it solved - it was the cable i suspected. Measured the impedance on that cable - i got like 0.8ohms, then indefinite, then again 0.8 (when i messed around with that cable). I tried to start the engine with the old cable - no go. Then replaced with new one - wrooom! Tried to switch two more times and-same results. Looks like either the connector is bad, or the filter (condensor). Is it likely that this cable fails? Is that why it's included when you buy a new distributor?

Thanx
