I have just finished a complete rebuild of my 1992 Cobra sterndrive [model 584APRAMH].

I want to totally empty out the old trim/tilt fluid and replace with 100% new ATF dextron III fluid. My OMC workshop manual gives the procedure to top-up and bleed but does not tell me how to completely drain out old fluid.

Tilt Rams are removed at the moment.

Anyone know how to drain the system fully without damaging the trim pump - I don't want to run it dry??

Thanks, John

Thanks Folks,

Amazing answer - and there was me thinking someone might have an intelligent suggestion about how to drain it without removal.

cheers.

you don't remove all the oil from any hydraulic system - just change what's in the reservoir frequently and the oil will be renewed eventually

Thanks to everyone who responded, I ultimately pulled the trim pump out and turned it upside down to get all the fluid out. it was full of crap as I expected. Unfortunately, this boat has not been 'loved' in the past and I thought complete fluid replacement was the best bet. I agree with Howard Sterndrive that going forward it can have regular top-ups which should mean it wont need a full replacement again.

cheers and safe boating to all.
