Full throttle?

I have a 1968 Johnson 6 horse outboard and it does not seem to be generating full power. Some days it will get up to what feels like full power but then it will just die. Most of the time the engine seems to run at 1/2 the normal WOT RPM's with the throttle all the way open.
Thanks for any help in advance.

Re: Full throttle?

Sounds like one cylinder isn't firing. Start by replacing the spark plugs. If that doesn't work, then it's time to check the rest of the ignition system.

Re: Full throttle?

The spark plugs have been replaced, that is the first thing I did. Also is the water coming out of the cooling system supposed to be cool enough to run your hand under for more than a minute? This one is hot enough that 30 seconds is painful.
Thanks for the help, how do I go about checking the rest of the ignition system?
