Full-Closed Cooling System Riser/Elbow Gaskets?

I have a fully closed cooling system on my 1990 7.4L Mercruiser. I need to find new blockoff gaskets for the Exhaust Manifold to Exhaust Elbow/Risers joint. The stock set was just a single thick gasket. Are there better options out there? If so, could you point me to the location to purchase them? I'm going to be replacing the Elbows as well, so if there is a kit available, that would be great.

Thanks for your help.

Howdy,

I used the "stock" set on mine and they work fine.....I don't know what could be "better" unless you get dryjoint manifolds and risers...

I wish someone made "dry-joint" manifolds for the 454 but since the 454 is no longer made it doesn't appear that anyone will.

When you say "stock", are you saying something like this:

Sierra 18-0672??

I suppose these will work fine if you replace them on a regular basis, right? It's never made any sense to me that they rely on gasket material to separate the seawater from the antifreeze. Seems a stainless plate with gaskets on either side would be more reliable. This is kind of what I was trying to find, but I don't see them listed anywhere.

By stock, I mean the "silvery" ones that Mercruiser and the after market (Sierra and others) sell......they go on dry too......

Yes, I agree, a stainless plate might be better, but probably not necessary.

Mine have been on there since I installed the closed cooling on the engine about 2 years ago. I haven't had mine in salt water yet but when I do it'll probably be launched/recovered in fresh water (Lake Washington) and carefully flushed when I get home. I also winterize(the raw water side) using 50/50 antifreeze.

I know the gasket set up for my full closed system has a stainless metal plate sandwiched between two gaskets. I got them thru WWW.OSCOMOTORS.COM its called "Stainless plate" & the part# for it is 8503-SS. I hope this helps you out.
