Fueling Problem

Bought a 1985 25' searay, when fueling, I can only pump about 2 gallons, before the fuel cuts off and spurts back out, then I hear the gas gurgling back down, I tried making sure the fuel nozzle rubber was tight, then tried holding the rubber on the nozzle, so there wasn't a tight fitting and it didn't matter. Took me 1/2 hr. to pump 60 gallons. Took off upholstery to look at fittings and hoses, did not see any kinks or twist, Overflow vent appears to be clean.

Re: Fueling Problem

double check the vent line. did you feel or hear air flowing through it when you were filling up? if not, that's your problem. if that's not it, i'd turn to the anti-siphon assembly that should be right at the tank.

Re: Fueling Problem

Check the vent line - looking at it won't tell you if it is clogged.

It is not a problem with your anti-siphon valve, it is inbetween the tank and engine and will not affect filling of the tank. However, with that said, if you have everthing torn apart already, replace the A/S valve while you are in there. Consider it $10 worth of prevention.

I saw something yesterday ina barts catalog that attaches to the gas hose while your filling suppose to make the gas come out quicker might want to check it out

Re: Fueling Problem

Found the problem, removed the vent and lo and behold, after prodding and blowing, out came a 1/2" plug of old wax, the previous owner must of used liquid wax, there was no wax on the outside of the screen. Going to put gas in tomorrow and see if that fixes it. Thanks everyone.:):D

Check the fill hose too. They do degrade, over time, and the plys can seperate, thus choking off the fill.

I hope the vent clog fixed it. As stated, a check of the fill hose is in order. You do not want to pump a bunch of gas into your bilge.

Re: Fueling Problem

I had a similar problem when filling my tank last month. The gas pump kept clicking off. I could hear the air coming out the vent line. It took a while to fill 22 gallons. I finally got gas out the vent line so I knew I was full. I was about 1/2 full when I started and have a 40 gallon tank on my 19' I/O. I was filling it for winter storage so I didn't worry about it now. But as the subject has come up, I was wondering. It sounds like I need to check or replace my fuel line and the vent line. I ran the motor for about 15 minutes after filling it and it started and ran fine.

Re: Fueling Problem

Carott,

Fuel/vent lines degrade. Especially with alcohol laced fuels.

Fuel fiil/vent hoses that are not designed for the fuels we get today can cause problems.

It's cheap insurance to replace them with BIA/USCG approved hoses. Avoid the "kink"s.

Re: Fueling Problem

Getting the wax out of the vent FIXED IT, fueled up with no problem. Now, just as a safety precaution, I'm going to replace all the fuel hoses, and the anti-siphon valve. I imagine, they maybe original (1985).
Again Thanks everyone!
