Fueling Problem

I bought a '79 Cobalt. The first time I filled it up this spring (yikes!!!!), everything was fine. The last three times, I have had to fill it at a trickle. If I latch the handle to the first stop, it "boils" out and shuts off. It also comes out the burp line. I have tried putting the nossle in a little and all the way with the same result. What is going on?

On a related note, fuel likes to come out the burp line when sitting in my yard, even though I had only a half tank of gas. I know the burp is for fuel to expand and let the vapors out, but why the gas too?

Re: Fueling Problem

Check the routing of the vent line. It may have drooped over time and has fuel trapped in the droop. As the boat warms up, the fuel expands and pushes out. Reroute the hose as high as possible with no droops.

That would make sense. I changes oil after I filled up the first time and may have moved the vent line.

Thanks.

If the vent fitting on the transom does not have a screen on it to keeep insects out there are insect that will build mud nests in any holes they find and plug it up. I have had this happen more than once.

If a wasp gets in there, I will just have to filler up and light a match to clear it out :D

Re: Fueling Problem

Your tank may in fact be full. I had a simular problem a couple of years ago and found out the problem was with a bad fuel tank sender. It said 1/2 full when it was full.
