fueling mishap

earlier today i went to put in 3 gallons of gas into the tank to see if i could get the engine to fire up. Having just done the cables, rebuilt carbs, rebuilt water pump, replaced the spark plugs. Thought I was ready to see if it would come to life. Forgot to check and see if the filler hose was connected to the tank, guess what, it wasnt. 3 gallons of gas in the boat. What a smell. Oh well I flushed it out with water and gonna try again tomorrow. Once again, the boat is fighting me all the way. I shall prevail, she will be back on the water.

Why was the filler hose not connected? Was it something you did, and why? Just a really odd thing to have happen.

it is an old boat that hasnt seen water for a while and the PO must have disconnected it, to clean the tank or whatever. wish I would have noticed it though. the boat smell like gas now. definatly going to check out everything in the morning to make sure everything is tightened up.

If the tank has been disconnected for a long time, there's probably all kinds of crud and critters in it. Check the motor out on a portable tank, and clean the boat tank before you hook it up.

Sounds like you skipped the survey part of the repair cycle.:D

i got the boat then i found the iboats sight. would not have gotten this boat the way i did if i had the knowledge that has been bestowed upon me since coming here to the forums. luckily the floors are solid as well as the transom, everything else is just time and money to make work. i really like the boat and look forward to many hours of enjoyment with the wife and family members.

good luck; take your time and be careful. IN a way you are better off with a boat needing work and attention, b/c you will end up knowing your boat far better than if you bought a "turn key" and did your learning drifting in the lake or at the ramp.

Just curious, what did you do with the 3 gallons of gas that was in the boat?

Re: fueling mishap

i soaked it up with pigmat and took it to work for disposal. then i flushed it out with water into the back yard which is alkaline. I live in the desert and it was 100 degrees out and it evaporated pretty quick. when i took the tank out and flushed it out it took only a couple of hours to dry. gotta love the bright orange thing in the sky, and 100 degrees. i work at a gold mine and they have hasmat disposal so most of the gas was disposed of properly. made for a stinky ride to work today though.
