fuel vent hose problem.

Seems when ever I am out on the boat on a hot day and you step on the fuel tank in the floor it will burp some fuel out into the water. I try to not fill the tank past 3/4 but it still seems to do this.

I was looking at the hose and it has a 8-10 inch loop in it just before it exits the transom. I am thinking vapors are pooling in this loop then when you step on the tank it pushes a little fuel out. Is this even possible?

Is this loop necessary to have there? It would be nice to actually carry a full tank of fuel once and a while.

I'd be more concerned that the floor is soft enough to actually flex the tank.

The loop is there to prevent any water which finds its way into the vent fitting from getting into the actual tank... And yes, it is neccessary.

oldjeep brings up a valid point... How is the floor flexing that much?

the floor is actually solid all over. But the tank is right in front of the motor in the center of the floor. The thin plywood that they used to manufacture the boat lays directly on the tank.

It only happens when a 200+ type of person stands on the tank. It does not flex much but it is enough to burp fuel out.

If anything, a longer vent hose would help prevent it while maintaining the loop... That way more fuel can be forced into the vent line without making it all the way to the actual vent fitting.

Longer, and/or getting the vent line higher will help you. I highly, highly doubt the fuel you see exiting the vent fitting is recondensed fuel vapor.

By "Loop" do you mean a full 360 degree loop, like the vent hose is 2 feet too long and just coiled up?

The vent hose should come up from the tank to a point above the vent fitting and then back down to the fitting.
Sort of like a very lazy upside down "U".
There should be no low spots to pool any fluids.
Fuel coming up from the tank should flow back to the tank via gravity.
Water splashing in from the outside should flow back out to the outside via gravity.

Is sound like someone was too lazy to cut the vent hose to the proper length and just coiled it up.
