I have heard that when you put gas in your boat that you can apply for the road tax portion be returned on your taxes. Is that true? Have you done it? How much on a gallon of gas will be credited? This could be well worth my time with a boat and 2 jet skiis. Thanks for any info.

I've heard that as well but it was only some states. NJ wasnt one of them so I never looked into it further.

I reside in Delaware and I get back $.25 per gallon back, so far I've received about $65.00 for last season.

No tax return if it is for recreational use in COLORADO. Darnit, I thought I was onto something. I guess I need to make a business license for my boat??

Can you not buy gas that is road tax exempt?

In Canada you can buy "marked" gas that has a purple dye in it. It is road tax exempt and can only legally be used in boats, lawn mowers, farm vehicles etc.

in the states, you can usually buy offroad dyed diesel, but I've never seen gasoline sold that way.

How is the refund and application (if any) handled? Is this done during regular tax filing?

EDIT: Found the form and procedure for Delaware. I am between 150 to 200 bucks in refund $ at my pace.

You can recoup about 18 cents per gallon of Gasoline from the federal government. Your state may or may not allow you to recoup taxes in your state.

The feds do not allow you recover gas tax for RECREATIONAL boat use. (missouri allows .18 cents, might be thinking of that...)

http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p510.pdf
(as well as 4136)

Its often abused and misunderstood, but the catch is that the IRS does not specifically list boating as 'off highway' use. If it isn't listed, it isn't exempt.

What you can legally deduct if you itemize is the amount of fuel tax you paid, which will go against your taxable income. Unless you do a huge amount of recreational boating, this isn't really even worth keeping track of.

Virginia has it. The regs suggest that a printed out receipt from the pumps is no good, but the state has honored them. There is also confusion about whether you keep, or send in, the originals. And then, the originals fade after a year or so.

Since I buy all my boat gas at the gas station, I keep the receipts, markit boat, and send in when I accumulate a bunch. You'd think the marina's would deduct the tax for you but they don't.

Well I'd better correct myself then. :)

In British Columbia you can buy marked gas. Some gas stations have it and every marine fuel supplier has it.
