I have a 1997 Cobia 174 cc with gas leaking into the bottom of the boat. The tank is located under the center console with nothing but a small opening to see the top of the tank. I've been told on this model boat, there is no way to remove take without cutting the floor. Why would anybody put a tank in the bottom of a boat with no access? Is someone familiar with this particular boat?:confused:

hi ...

welcome to iboats !!

it is possible that the hoses to the tank are leaking....but more than likely the tank is shot.

it is not uncommon but rather the norm to fully incase a tank in a deck with out access... there should be an access to the receiver area.....check that to make sure its not leaking there.

if you decide the deck must come up.....we can guide you step by step to remove it and replace it....
on a side not....im kinda shocked that a 97 is leaking already.....usually they don't leak for another decade or tow

I'm a single mom and yes, this is my first boat. I don't know the boaters language, what is the receiver area?

the reciver is the thing that has wires running to it.....it is hooked to the gas tank.....and there is a float in the tank.....this will make your gas gauge work.

a real cheap fix for you.....is to get a portable gas tank...and hook it up to your motor.

des the boat you have have a motor hanging off the back?...(an out board) or is the motor inside the boat? with a drive leg attached to the back?

like this..

Oops, isn't the part in the tank called the "sending unit" since it send the signal to the gas gauge?

yep....sorry.....lol, ill go smash my head against a wall now.

It looks like a small round plate that is bolted in the tank.....with wires coming from it.

your tank will look different....but this is what the plate looks like

if you do decide to repair the boat....we can help, ....I boats sells new gas tanks.

you will need to know the size and shape of the tank before you can order a new one

anti-siphon is basically anti-theft...it makes it harder to siphon the fuel to be stolen (which is pretty common problem with boats)

What is the purpose of the anti-siphon valve?

If there's a failure of the fuel line or anything downstream of the tank,...
The tank can't drain itself by siphon...

Re: Fuel tank removal and repair

After sitting in my yard a couple of weeks, all the fuel from my tank ended up in the bilge.

lots of things....

they fail all the time.
being a 97 that is kinda young for a failure.....im leaning toward improper installation....
possibly ribbing or possibly a dcrew penetrated it during deck or owner add on instlation
