It must be vented. The fuel pump sucks fuel from the tank. Without the tank being vented, the tank will come to the point where the fuel pump can no longer overcome the negative pressure to the point that your motor will run out of fuel. If your using an OMC steel tank the venting occurs when you attach the fuel hose to the tank. If it's a plastic tank your using then you must open the vent in the middle of the cap. Best of luck.
