Fuel tank leak

Hi everyone, I noticed a fuel tank leak on the elbow that comes from the pump into the tank. See picture, it’s leaking between the large nut and the tank. I’m wondering if anyone knows if there is an o-ring under there or how it’s sealed? Wanted to ask before I try and undo it in case there is a nut on the inside of the tank to hold it in place. Any information is greatly appreciated!

Some tanks have a molded in insert. If that is leaking, it's new tank time

Some fittings are bulkhead fittings with O-ring or rubber gaskets. You would have to pull the sender to check

Thanks Scott, do I need to empty the tank before pulling the sender? It’s about half full right now.

Best to empty the tank if possible, why take a chance ?? While your at it, remove the sending unit, and you will have an acess hole there to check the underside of that fitting. That rubber gasket under the sending unit needs replaced anyway before you have another leak. Might as well fix all the potential leak areas, and clean out your tank at the same time. Also clean out the vent hose and make sure there is an upward bend or loop so water can't run back into the fuel tank. If your gonna dig into this, might as well fix everything while you have it all apart ! As for me....I hate having to do something over because I didn't do it right the first time !!

what ever you do. do not use a shop vac to suck out fuel. ( I know someone that did that).

I use either a fuel pump rig I have or a manual pump to drain fuel from tanks thru the sender hole once I have the sender out

Thanks guys, yes definitely no shop vac!! Yikes! Ok, then to replace sender rubber gasket, can I just make a new one out inner tube or do I need to find a part for that? The vent tube does have a loop to keep water out, but has been hard to fill this year, I will check it for blockage.

Ok, update here, I managed to get that nut off and there is no o-ring or any type of gasket there. The aluminum sleeve just threads down into the moulded plastic of the tank. Should I put an o-ring under that nut, make a gasket, or use some permatex motoseal gasket maker?
