I left the pressure tank for my Big twin in the shed and forgot to crack the cap and release pressure. It was hot that day.

When I went back into the shed, the tank had leaked some fuel.

The thing is, the tank holds pressure and runs the outboard perfectly.

Is this just a pressure release valve or something that let some gas out with the pressure?

Tanks have vents, so yours sounds normal. I keep mine vented slightly unless the tank is empty.

Being a pressure tank, I expected it to hold pressure, which is why I usually crack the cap open when I store it.

I hope you are right, I don't want to get into rebuilding it just yet.

By definition, the pressure tank is not vented if the cap is tight. However, as you found out, storing it with the cap tight will allow even a tiny leak to be substantial over a long period of time, so loosen the cap for storage. Besides, you get that wonderful satisfying hs.s.s.s when you crack it open at the end of the day.

If it runs the motor ok and doesn't have any obvious leaks, go ahead and run it. But of course any known leaks should be repaired.

So, probably just a good idea to go and rebuild it.

Works for me. The repair kits aren't pricey.
