fuel sending unit test?

I just purchased a used fuel tank to replace one that was too large. The old tank filled the entire center console area and I want some storage space. The one I just purchased has a sending unit on it and my old one did not. (it is see through). Is there any type of resistance test to see if the gauge is still good? I dont yet have a fuel gauge to check it with. Thanks again.

Re: fuel sending unit test?

You can easily test your sender by checking its resistance with an ohmeter.

First remove the senders pink wire. Then connect your two test meter wires to two sender terminals. If your particular sender has one terminal let me know. Then move the float arm by hand while holding the meters wires on the terminals.

When moving it the meter should read these approximate values.

Empty Tank (arm extended fully down) will read 240 ohms
1/2 (arm halfway extended up) Tank will read 103 ohms
Full Tank (arm extended fully up) will read 33 ohms

BTW, if the sender is not of the marine variety, it will read differently.
